Have you ever wondered, whilst browsing for carpet retailers in Yorkshire, London or Leeds where carpet manufacturers originated and when carpets were first discovered?

The most crucial time in the long history of carpets dates back to Persian times. They originated with the ascension of the Safavid rulers, who came to power between 1499 and 1722. To date the original discovery of carpets there are over 1500 historical examples which have been preserved by a number of museums and private collections globally.

It was in the reign of Shah Abbas between 1571 and 1629 that crafts and commerce started to prosper in Persia. The ruler, Shah Abbas encouraged trade and regular contacts around Europe and thus transformed the new capital of Isfahan into the most decadent and glorious cities in the whole of Persia.

Shah encouraged the creation of a court ‘or kingdom’ workshop for carpets which is probably one of the earliest examples of carpet manufacturers which saw skilled craftsmen and carpet designers working tirelessly to create the most lavish of carpets. The majority of the earlier carpets were made from real gold and silver threading for added embellishment and silk was also a popular material in the use of ‘court’ carpets.

It was only when the ‘Axminster’ period arrived in 18th and 19th century England that carpets in the UK began to appear more frequently in homes around England, however, carpet manufacturers were still hand making their carpets individually. Carpet materials changed towards the second part of the 19th century to make mass production possible, resulting in great carpet discount prices, and such materials as cut pile wool are still seen in carpet brands today such as Westex Carpets, Kingsmead Carpets, Cormar Carpets, Brintons, Woodward Grosvenor & other leading manufacturers.

During the Axminster period, Devon was clearly on the map when it came to carpet manufacturing, however, in recent years due to the sheep farming industry which provided essential wool for the carpet making process meant that carpet manufacturers quickly started to spring up, resulting in carpets in Leeds and West Yorkshire areas of the country.

Axminster have been creating superior carpets for over 250 years now and the quality of the carpets the company produces has made them one of the world’s leading carpet manufacturers.

Where did it all begin?

The Axminster Carpet Factory was originally founded in 1775 by Thomas Whitty in Axminster, Devon. Axminster Carpets Ltd soon developed an aristocratic following with King George III snapping up carpets and prestigious buildings such as Chatsworth House and Brighton Pavilion also investing in Axminster. Although the original factory burnt down, in 1937 carpet manufacturer Harry Dutfield re-launched Axminster Carpets Ltd in its original home of Axminster. Since then, Axminster have continued to create world class carpets for homes, public buildings, trains and aircraft all over the world.

What makes Axminster carpets special?

Axminster carpets have always been associated with quality and it is the way the carpets are spun using 90% British wool that creates the luxurious look and feel. Axminster carpets are woven and then cut to a required pile height which makes the carpets both durable and plush to walk on.

Which carpet is right for my home?

There is a huge variety of Axminster carpets available so whether you are looking for a single bold colour or an exciting pattern you won’t be disappointed. The three main elements you will need to consider when buying an Axminster are the texture, style and colour of the carpet. As Axminster carpets are so durable you won’t need to worry about the longevity or quality of the carpet you choose. Carpet laying is a difficult process so once you are sure of the carpet you want then ask a professional to measure your room so you can be sure you order the correct carpet size. To find out for sure which Axminster carpet is right for your home, ask carpet retailers for samples so you can see how the carpet complements your current decor and style. To make sure you get the best possible result from your new carpet it is well worth investing in a new underlay to protect your new investment and to benefit from an improved look & feel, talk to us about our range of underlays.

Where can I buy Axminster carpets from?

Most good carpet shops sell Axminster carpets so make sure you buy from a reputable retailer to make sure you are buying the real thing. If you’re looking for cheap carpets by Axminster then try online or visit factory outlets to take advantage of the latest deals.

To check out the range of Axminster carpets online visit our carpet shop today.
