Caring for your carpet

Many luxurious carpets are made from pure new wool. We are lucky enough here in Yorkshire that wool from our region goes into the manufacturing of these carpets

We are also lucky enough in Yorkshire to have many manufacturers of quality carpets with products been made in Dewsbury, Cleckheaton, wetherby & Wakefield so If you are planning to buy a wool carpet many retailers in Leeds or nearby towns like Bradford, Harrogate, York and Ilkley will have brands such as Westex, Bronte Carpets, Brinton & Ryalux Carpets amongst many others on display.

Once you have chosen your preferred carpet shop and selected the design and colour of your carpet you then need to know how to care for your carpet so it lasts for even longer & keep it`s appearance.

For example a new wool carpet is going to last much longer if it is vacuumed regularly, cleaned periodically and is immediately cleared of any spills and spots.

With any carpet when a spill occurs DO NOT rub the stain, this will only help the stain to penetrate the yarn more, put plenty of kitchen towel or clothes onto the stain to blot it out,  then put cold water on the stain & repeat the blotting, keep putting the water on the stain & blotting until the stain is removed.  Leave the stain to dry, if ( & it probably will ) the stain reappears   use an appropriate carpet cleaner ( we generally find a mousse works best ). If the stain persists call a reputable carpet cleaner, a good place to look is www.ncca.co.uk.

Do not ever use detergents on your carpet, for example washing liquids, household cleaners or soap; whilst some of these substances will clean the stain it will damage your carpet and possibly lead to colour bleeding and pile damage.   ALWAYS USE COLD WATER ONLY WHEN FIRST REMOVING A STAIN.

For newly laid carpets, the first 4 – 8 weeks it will lose fibre, particularly those carpets that have been cut or are velour pile. DON`T PANIC – This is a common effect that is known as shedding and occurs when the yarn has been spun during the carpet manufacturing process. The carpet will need to be vacuumed at least 2-3 times per week using an upright vacuum with a beater bar to loosen the fibre & vacuum it away.
